Interview with the photographer Ricardo Miras / Entrevista al fotógrafo Ricardo Miras

On the occasion of the publication of the book “Barcelona”, in which approximately 300 photographs of more than 70 authors review the photographic look of Barcelona city and its citizens since 1855 until today, The Art of Paloma has had the opportunity to interview one of the authors who has participated in this volume, the recognized photographer Ricardo Miras.

Con motivo de la edición del libro “Barcelona”, en el que aproximadamente 300 fotografías de más de 70 autores revisan la mirada fotográfica sobre la ciudad de Barcelona y sus ciudadanos desde 1855 hasta la actualidad, The Art of Paloma ha tenido la oportunidad de entrevistar a uno de los autores que han participado en este volumen, el reconocido fotógrafo barcelonés Ricardo Miras.

What can we find in the book “Barcelona”?

It is a photographic tour from the XIX century until today of a cosmopolitan, subtle and elegant city as it is Barcelona.

¿Qué podemos encontrar en el libro “Barcelona”?

Es un recorrido fotográfico desde el siglo XIX hasta hoy de una ciudad cosmopolita, elegante y sutil como es Barcelona.

What has meant for you to participate in the book?

First, it has been a joy to be able to take part in this nice and interesting book of my hometown. Such an honour. Also sharing space together with recognized national and international photographers as Helmut Newton, Cartier-Bresson, Richard Avedon or Català-Roca (among others), does not happen every day and therefore is very exciting.

¿Qué ha supuesto para ti participar en el libro?

Primero ha supuesto una alegría poder participar en este bonito e interesante libro de mi ciudad natal. Un honor. También compartir espacio junto con reconocidos fotógrafos internacionales y nacionales de la talla de Helmut Newton, Cartier-Bresson, Richard Avedon o Català-Roca (entre otros), no pasa cada día y por lo tanto es muy emocionante.

Tell us about the story of the photography you sign in the book: how and when you made it, in which part of the city…

It was taken on Puerta de Europa bridge, located in the Port of Barcelona. The catch was in 2011.

It is definitely one of my latest photos captured with an analog camera. I was looking for places for a Project. I had the right frame to shoot when I heard a motorbike approaching and I decided to shoot when it passed. I was lucky, as it was a motorbike with good aesthetics and not going fast.

Cuéntanos la historia de la fotografía: cómo y en qué momento la tomaste, en qué parte de la ciudad…

Fue tomada en el puente de la Puerta de Europa situada en el Puerto de Barcelona. La captura fue en el 2011.

Sin duda es una de mis últimas fotografías capturada con una cámara analógica. Estaba buscando lugares para un proyecto. Estaba con el encuadre correcto a punto de disparar cuando oí una moto acercarse y decidí disparar cuando pasaba. La suerte es que fuera una moto con buena estética y no iba rápido.

You have worked with very famous people and for advertising campaigns of prestigious national and international brands, which projects are those with more relevance or meaning for you?

I’ve enjoyed the most with portraits orders, as I could add much more of myself, always within the orders limits. Among all I’ve done, I would highlight three for the lived experience: with Jacqueline Bisset, an amazing woman in all aspects, beautiful, friendly and very interesting; I was lucky enough to share a table with her after the shooting, it was a pleasure to be able to have a long conversation with her.

Will Smith, affable character, charismatic, as you see him in any interview, a close person with no air of superiority. I was surprised by his spontaneity and easy cooperation.

And the third one, Antoni Tàpies, a great artist, with whom we talked about the art world, showed us his newly created foundation and explained us part of his work. An enriching experience.

Has trabajado con personajes muy conocidos y para campañas publicitarias de prestigiosas marcas nacionales e internacionales, ¿Qué proyectos son aquellos que más te han marcado?

Con los que más he disfrutado ha sido con los encargos de retratos. Son encargos en los cuales he podido poner más de mi; siempre dentro del encargo ya que tienen unos límites. De los muchos que he hecho, hay tres que destacaría por la experiencia vivida: con Jacqueline Bisset, una mujer de bandera en todos los aspectos, bella, simpática y muy interesante; tuve la suerte de compartir mesa con ella después de la sesión, todo un placer poder conversar con ella largo y tendido.

Will Smith, personaje afable, carismático, tal como lo ves en cualquier entrevista, un personaje cercano y sin ningún aire de más. Me sorprendió su naturalidad y fácil cooperación.

Y el tercero, Antoni Tàpies, un pedazo de artista, con el que conversamos sobre el mundo del arte, nos enseñó su fundación recién creada y nos explicó parte de su obra. Toda una rica experiencia.

Which Project would you highlight of those you are currently doing?

A Project called We Run Project, result of the meeting with 41 marathon runners of different social and cultural fields. Along with their interviews, we find the pictures I took to each one of them. Each snapshot discovers the diversity that exists in the universe of the runner and it is verified that there is no type of barrier, nor cultural, nor social, nor politic, nor economic. Their ages range from 23 years to 103 years, they are from 16 different nationalities and their professions and lives are very different.

Besides the famous people who have participated in We Run Project as Mikel Erentxun, Martin Fiz, Luis Rojas Marcos, Fernanda Maciel, Gabriela Andersen Schiess, Jaime Alguersuari, Eliud Kipchoge, Luis Enrique Martínez, Emma Roca… we also find anonymous persons as an unemployed, a priest, a blind person, a centenary man…

For me it has been very inspiring to participate in this initiative. We Run Project aims to become a reference movement that supports through sport the equality and social inclusion. It is a very photographic book and 100% of the sales benefits are intended for a training program of the Superacció Association. I leave you the link: http://werunproject.org/

 ¿Qué proyecto destacarías de aquellos en los que estás inmerso actualmente?

Un proyecto llamado We Run Project, resultado del encuentro con 41 runners de maratón de distintos ámbitos sociales y culturales. Junto con sus entrevistas encontramos las fotografías que realicé a cada uno de ellos, en cada una de las instantáneas se descubre la diversidad que existe en el universo del corredor y se comprueba que no hay ningún tipo de barrera, ni cultural, ni social, ni política, ni económica. Sus edades comprenden desde los 23 años hasta los 103 años, son de 16 nacionalidades diferentes y sus profesiones y vidas son muy diferentes.

Aparte de personas mediáticas que han participado en We Run Project como Mikel Erentxun, Martin Fiz, Luis Rojas Marcos, Fernanda Maciel, Gabriela Andersen Schiess, Jaime Alguersuari, Eliud Kipchoge, Luis Enrique Martínez, Emma Roca… también encontramos a personas anónimas como un parado, un sacerdote, un invidente, un hombre centenario…

Para mi ha sido muy inspirador participar en esta iniciativa. We Run Project pretende convertirse en un movimiento de referencia que apoye a través del deporte la igualdad y la inclusión social.
